Inspiration and science story
Inspiration and science story
The SAMS Ocean Explorer Tartan was commissioned by the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), and was developed in collaboration with Crúbag. This tartan was woven in Scotland and is registered in the Scottish Register of Tartans.
Founded in 1884 in Edinburgh by Sir John Murray, SAMS is Scotland's oldest and largest independent marine science organisation and a charity solving huge global issues through marine science, creating a stronger planet through healthier oceans, and inspiring others to be part of the solution.
The tartan's dominant medium blue represents the global ocean, while the lighter blue stands for coastal zones, very light blue stands for clean water and air, and dark blue for the deep sea. The white symbolises Scotland's connection with, and SAMS' research expertise in, the Arctic, while the yellow represents biodiversity and oceanographic technologies. The purple recognises SAMS' deep commitment to the community, to education and to the founding partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), while the bright green stands for algae and for SAMS' mission for a sustainable ocean future where human society is in harmony with nature.
