Climate Change, Ocean Acidification & Cold-Water Corals.

When we hear the word coral, most of us think of rich and colourful tropical coral reefs in the shallow seas of the Caribbean, Australia or the Pacific. But did you know that over half of all living coral species known today grow in the cold dark deep ocean around the world? Coral Blossom reveals the hidden beauty of the majestic and little known cold-water corals.

We collaborated with Prof Murray Roberts and his team at the Changing Oceans research group, The University of Edinburgh, to create this design using science imagery and bring this fascinating marine science story to you.

Scientific Story

Cold-water corals are among the hidden heroes of Scotland's marine ecosystems. In the North Atlantic cold-water corals can form extensive deep-sea reefs and off the west coast of Scotland, such reefs have been discovered of 150-200m, defying the conventional wisdom that corals thrive only in the warm shallows of the tropics.

Beautiful and fascinating in their own right, these cold-water corals also create crucial habitats for thousands of other species. Cold-water corals also form important biological habitats on seamounts and on the walls of deep-sea canyons. Their beauty often remains unseen and their importance unappreciated.

"At times the prospects for cold-water corals seem so bleak it’s hard to remain optimistic. But as we understand more about which areas of the ocean will be climate refuges and learn more about cold-water coral ecology we can create climate resilient protected areas and start work to restore these beautiful hidden habitats." J Murray Roberts
